Mondo Generator @ Amplifier Bar, Perth, Western Australia
20th August 2008 | Canon 400D
After announcing the east coast dates of an Australian tour, Perth was lucky enough to be added at the head of the dates, with a show at the always excellent (for seeing a band, there’s a ton of fuckwits there for when it becomes a late nite bar/nightclub…) Amplifier Bar. It’s kinda dank, a bit grimy, and very loud.
For those who don’t know about Perth’s history with Nick Oliveri, it’s the stuff of small city gossip. And fuck it, I think it should stay that way. Perth’s gotta be able to hold something over the better cities of the world.Let’s just say one thing is certain: Nick Oliveri played his last show with Queens of the Stone Age in Perth. Rumours abound about what exactly transpired that night post-show, but one thing is certain; the relationship of Homme and Oliveri was over.
This show at Amplifier was Oliveri’s return to Perth, and it was solid. The word was that the rider contained confectionary, rather than the expected spirits en masse.
Either way, the crowd heard plenty of Mondo tracks, which peppered with a few Oliver-era QOTSA and Kyuss classics (namely; Millionaire, Autopilot, Allen’s Wrench, 13th Floor/Tension Head) equaled an entertaining way to kill a few hours, even as someone was overhead post-show saying (accurately, I might add) “he’s lucky he was in Queens”.
